Owner: Dr. Jean Menzel — Bruxelles, Belgique
Collection: (JMenzel) Brussels
Inventory No.:
Artist: Chagall
Medium: Paintings
Title: Le paysan
Description: Eastern Jew with a ladder leaning against his nose and a green animal on the nose.
Literature: Acquired for 3800 Frs. at the Walter Schwarzenberg sale in February 1932 at Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels, Belgium.
Provenance and Comments: The painting's seizure is described in a document from the Arbeitsgruppe Belgien dated 31 March 1941. Presumably, the Menzel residence was searched by NSKK Obertruppführer Zeller. This painting ended up on the New York art market at the gallery of Klaus Perls, whose family had been plundered both in Germany and in France. Still, Mr. Perls sold the painting to the Liss family without checking its provenance. The Menzels found out about its presence in New York and sued to recover it. Menzel v. Liss made jurisprudence as it was the first instance in which a WWII theft had been associated with an act of plunder during the genocide of the Jews. See
