Provenance and Comments: The painting was stolen from the estate in 1940. It reappeared right after the war in London at Arthur Tooth and Sons. Sold to John Barrow in 1949 resold to Arthur Tooth. Entered the Paul Mellon collection in December 1963 through Marlborough-Gerson in New York. The Mellon family therefore owned a looted Javal painting for close to half a century before selling it through Sotheby’s in November 2014 for 3.4 million dollars. Sotheby’s brokered a settlement with the heirs of Fernand Javal. See Vuillard
