Provenance and Comments: This painting was on a list of works compiled by the Sonderstab Louvre's Braumuller. This object was packed into a crate and transferred to the Jeu de Paume for Goering. French restitution files indicate that this painting was sold under duress to Karl Haberstock. According to records of the Munich Central Collecting Point (MCCP), this painting by Lucas Cranach bears Munich No. 5923, or W 86 in the ERR inventory. This painting went to Hermann Goering and ended up at Berchtesgaden, Germany before being returned to Munich and from there to France. However, French restitution records assign to this painting Munich No. 6743, which is the "Portrait of a gentleman with the Toison d'Or" by Cranach. And yet, the title given to the painting by French authorities is the title for W 86 which is not the same work. It is therefore not clear whether the French restituted W 86 to Georges Wildenstein or another Cranach painting with Munich No. 6743 on 31 May 1949 which does not belong to him.
