(BoR) Botschaft Rothschild--The largest collections stolen in France mostly by specialized elements of the German occupation forces belonged to the Rothschild family. The German Embassy in Paris guided by Ambassador Otto Abetz, oversaw the plunder of property belonging to various members of the Rothschild family, including Maurice, Alexandrine, James-Armand and Edmond. These early removals of Rothschild property occurred in the summer and fall of 1940 and were greatly aided by the Devisenschutzkommando (DSK), a securities and financial fraud police organization that had jurisdiction over bank vaults and safe deposit boxes where thousands of art objects were stored for safekeeping.

Description:

Lebensgroß, ganz figurig. Dargestellt in der roten Robe eines Präsidenten des Parlements von Paris. Der von einer grau gepuderten Perücke bedeckte Kopf ist dem Beschauer zugewendet.
In einem Sessel vor einem Faltschirm sitzend, in den Händen ein aufgeschlagenes Buch haltend.
Hinter ihm ein hoher stoffbezogener Faltschirm, neben ihm ein mit Büchern und Schreibzeug bedeckter Tisch mit blauer Tischdecke.
Pastell auf Papier, das auf Leinwand eklebt ist.
Gabriel-Bernard Graf von Rieux, 1687-1746, Sohn des Finanzmannes Samuel Bernard de Rieux.

Provenance and Comments:

According to the Munich Central Collecting Point (MCCP) database, BoR 44 belongs to the Rosenberg-Bernstein collection which was seized in Bordeaux, France. The owner of that collection is Paul Rosenberg. According to Maurice de Rothschild's claim, this painting belongs to him. In the French postwar claims files, reference is made to a "Portrait du Cardinal de Rieux" by Latour, with no ERR number associated with it. As this is the only painting by Latour bearing the likeness of Rieux which has been claimed as a loss by a member of the Rothschild family, we presume that this is the same work.
