Provenance and Comments: This painting by Max Ernst does not appear in any catalogue raisonne or other monograph about Max Ernst's works. There are approximately seven paintings which Ernst executed that are in the same style as "Marais aux Songes." But Peter Watson's painting is not acknowledged in the official literature. Hence, the mystery is complete as to the postwar fate of this work, assuming that it was not destroyed. Since it was taken together with other modernist works owned by Watson and comingled with paintings by Salvador Dali owned by Edward James, some of which were found in the postwar, one must remain hopeful that the "Marais aux Songes" is in private hands somewhere.
